The founder of the Yuan dynasty, Kublai Khan, issued money on paper known as Jiaochao. The original notes were limited according to area and duration, as in the Song Dynasty, but in the years that followed, faced with massive bottlenecks in financing their domination, paper money began to be spent without time restriction. Polymer banknotes have been designed to improve shelf life and prevent counterfeiting through built-in security features, such as visually variable devices, which are extremely difficult to reproduce. In medieval Italy and Flanders, silver merchants began to use promissy notes due to uncertainty and the impossibility of transporting large sums of money over long distances. At first, they were registered personally, but they quickly became a written order to pay the amount to the one who had it in their possession. The term “banknote” comes from banknotes (“nota di banco”) and dates from the 14th century; it originally recognized the right of the note holder to recover the precious metal deposited with a banker (usually gold or silver) (via a monetary account). In the fourteenth century, it was used in all parts of Europe and in the commercial colonies of the Italian city-state outside Europe. For international payments, more often the more efficient and sophisticated change (“lettera di cambio”), i.e. a borrowing note based on a virtual monetary account (usually a coin that no longer physically exists) was used. All physical currencies were physically linked to this virtual currency; this instrument was also used as a credit. Following a travel report on a visit to Prague by Ibrahim ibn Yaqub in 960, small pieces of cloth were used as a means of negotiation, these wipes having a fixed exchange rate against silver. Originally, the note was only a promise to the bearer to be able to hold it for its value in a certain enterprise, but in 1833, the second, in a series of bank charters, considered that the notes would be considered legal tender in peacetime.
